Collecting data and assessing it is very scientific in nature. Even the term data is often reserved for use in the sciences where scientists begin with a question and seek to find the answer which requires the analysis of the data. The business world, on the other hand, may have numbers–sales, inventory, customers–but those numbers are not analyzed and used to answer questions, right? Well, actually data is analyzed in business, and any businesses, small, mid-size, or large, that are not collecting and analyzing data to inform their business practices are missing a huge opportunity to make decisions that can benefit their businesses.

Know the Customers

In business, the primary goal is to sell something to customers. However, in order to sell something to customers, a business needs to know if there are customers willing to buy what they have for sale. Researching and analyzing data from similar industries is one method of how a business can determine if there is a market for what they wish to sell. This information will be the basis for whether a business plan can be written and whether a business can be built.

If that business is, in fact, viable based on the data, then the business will proceed. This does not mean that data is no longer important to the business. It actually is just as critical. For instance, a new company that is growing has a lot to learn about its customers. It is only through the gathering of information that this knowledge can be obtained. There are a variety of ways that this information can be gained, but one example is through the use of a customer data platform. This software will provide the business with useful information about customers.

Make Informed Decisions

Why would a business need to know more about its customers? To make informed business decisions. Having a greater understanding of customers will help a business make decisions about marketing strategies, software and equipment their company would benefit from investing in and other customer-facing aspects of the business that may need to be changed. This data could be used to make smarter purchasing decisions in real time and make the business owner implement discounts or sales. The data will tell the business what customers believe about their business and how they will shop which is critical information for a business.

Prepare for the Future

Not only is data critical to the current decisions being made by a company, but they are also important for planning for the future. Collected data can help businesses project into the future and anticipate areas in which their company will need to grow and adjust. Data allows a company to make better decisions for the company at present but also for the future.

For instance, the data may show that customer purchasing habits greatly increase in the summer but are far less in the cooler months. A company that can see this from the data can adjust its purchasing to guarantee a greater amount of inventory is on hand before the summer season and that less is ordered for the cooler months in order to save revenue or redirect those funds to a different investment in the business. Having information that tells a business about customer habits and behaviors can make a significant difference in the direction a company takes and whether the company remains healthy and growing.

The ability to gather information and learn from it is not just a matter of scientific study. Analyzing numbers in business has to be about more than just profits and losses if growth and sustainability are goals of the business. Gathering data that tells a business about its customers makes the business better equipped to meet its customers’ needs and wants and to handle the fluctuations and changes that can come with running a business. When data is collected and used to make decisions, owners can take action with confidence and do what is best for the business.
