In today’s world, where everything is going electric, it was only a matter of time before we got electric powered skateboards too. It is an idea that existed since 1975, with the gasoline powered MotoBoard, but soon after its invention, it was back to the drawing board as there were plenty kinks to work on such as pollution and noise, but it still inspired the designs that we enjoy today. The first design for a wireless electric skateboard was created in 1997, and patented on 1999, and has been the foundation for the modern electric boards we have today. Which only became widely available by 2004-2006.

There are two basic types of electric skateboards;

  • Longboards: For extended use. Great for tourists
  • Cruisers: For shorter distance use, and usually does not offer high speeds, hence the name.

The Mordern Electric Skateboard

The electric skateboard has evolved from normal urban use to off-road use and has inspired some extreme sports and events since its mainstream use. With the Off-road models able to traverse most terrain, including; Sand, Grass, and rocky areas. 

It is often operated by a wireless hand-held throttle remote but some employ the use of the rider’s body weight, where shifting his or her weight forward or backward make it go forward or backwards, respectively, and tilting to the side enables the board to turn to one side or the other.

An electric skateboard’s basic design consists of an electric motor, batteries, a wireless throttle and so on. But it wouldn’t be a motorised skateboard without the motor – powered by electricity – which enables it to move at the push of a button. So for the sake of uniqueness, different models employ different configurations to their motors, which we will address below.

  1. Wheel hub motor: the motor is covered in a material called a ‘urethane sleeve’ and doubles as the wheel. 
  2. Out runner motor: a motor that is placed close to the wheels and is connected to them by a toothed belt and pulley. This configuration allows for increased torque on the wheel which translates into more speed for the skateboard.
  3. A direct drive motor is a motor that is installed between the wheels and the trucks and is directly connected to the wheels.

  • Length – Basically, the longer the deck is, the more stable the skateboard will be.
  • Wheelbase – This is the distance between the front and rear trucks; a longer wheelbase provides greater weight distribution and speed stability.
  • Flexibility refers to the ability of the deck to absorb shocks. Downhill racers require sturdier decks since greater flexibility reduces the unit’s stability.
  • Trucks are vital and long-lasting T-shaped metal bodies that are attached beneath the surface of the electric skateboard’s two ends.

The truck is a very vital aspect of the skateboard as it affects the balance of the skateboard.

  • Motor and battery protection, regenerative braking, programming options such as acceleration and deceleration curves, and other advanced functions may be included in an electronic speed controller.

Regenerative braking is an option included in all electric boards. This option essentially recharges the batteries as you brake downhill. It is therefore vital to note that because of this, braking downhill on a fully charged e-skateboard could lead to overloading the battery.
