Flies are relatively small but a giant nuisance. These little pests will buzz as close to your head as possible, seemingly on purpose. They may even land on you and some flies will ‘bite’ you.

It should be noted that not all flies bite, the prick of pain is them inserting a tube to suck up food. The food is generally dead skin which is turned into a liquid by the acid the fly throws up.

Flies often carry diseases in their body which can be passed on when they bite. They can also carry them on their feet, leaving them everywhere they land. But, potentially worst of all is the fact that their liquid diet means they literally poop all the time.

That means you can get fly faeces on your food, clothes, and countertops. Disinfectant kills the germs but the best approach is to kill the flies or deter them before they even enter your property and become a nuisance

Fly Traps

There are many different options on the market or even homemade varieties of fly traps. However, the simplest and most effective option is ultraviolet fly traps. These attract the flies with the ultraviolet light and then electrocute them. It’s quick and efficient and keeps the flies away from you and your surfaces.

Essential Oils

There are plenty of different essential oils that are effective against flies and other pests. The best ones are lavender, peppermint, lemongrass, and eucalyptus. These are all aromas that flies detest and will stay clear of.

You can mix a few drops of the essential oils with water in a spray bottle and then spray the rooms. It is also worth spraying the door frame and window frames to deter the flies from entering.

The spray will need to be topped up periodically to make sure it remains effective.

Alongside this, you can also place a few drops of essential oil in an oil burner with some water. A candle underneath will send the aroma into the room and make your space smell great while deterring flies.

Cinnamon

Flies also hate the smell of cinnamon, as do ants. You can sprinkle cinnamon across entry ways to stop them from coming in or out. But, you can also use it with pot pouri, sprinkle a little cinnamon in the mix and leave the display on the side. The scent of cinnamon will drift around your home, scaring the flies away.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Flies are attracted to decay and fruit, hence the reason why they like the smell of apples. They are sweet and putting a little outside your home will attract the flies.

Of course, you’re not trying to get more flies in your home. That’s why you need to add a little dish soap to your bowl of apple cider vinegar. This will ensure the flies are attracted and they then become trapped in the solution, the soap will prevent them from leaving.

By placing this around the entry points you can keep the flies out of your home.
