Where to go and things to do in Marrakech

There are 2 key desserts that visitors visit in Morocco for their Sahara desert holiday – either the Zagora Desert or the Merzouga Desert and generally visitors commence their trip from either Marrakech tour package or Fez. We will talk about both these points further below.

Sahara desert near Merzouga

Merzouga trips are the most famous Sahara tours, you can reach them. Merzouga being placed near the famous Erg Chebbi sand dunes. The dunes at Erg Chebbi are richer and taller in color than the dunes found close to Zagora making them a much more sought-after place.

Perhaps the largest benefit of Merzouga desert trips, is that the town is right on the edge of the amazing Erg Chebbi sand dunes. Additional, the town is full of new hotels and you can simply reach the sand dunes with a little of thirty minutes camel ride. This makes a Merzouga desert tour relatively simple and perfect for people short on time or not wanting to go too far off the beaten track.

Merzouga is placed around nine hours from Marrakech or seven hours drive from Fez. If you are joining one of the Morocco tour packages, you will need to permit at least 2 nights and 3 days as you will stop overnight on the way there.

Zagora

Zagora is placed in the southern part of Morocco and is placed near to the Erg Chigaga sand dunes. These sand dunes are placed some sixty kilometers from the closest roads and so the trek to view them takes quite a lot longer to view the sand dunes from Merzouga.

To reach Zagora, you must first get to the little town of M Hamid. From here it is rather a long trek through rugged desert terrain before arriving at the Erg Chigaga sand dunes.

It is also vital to note that the Zagora desert is not the orange like the desert you might visualize – this is a stone desert, which has a more moon-like appearance. So for this reason it does tend to be less famous than Merzouga and tends to be for the budget visitors or for those that favor getting off the beaten track.
