Despite being made from a slightly heavier compound, the design of the Lews reel frame is still very light in the hand. What’s more, it’s every bit as sturdy as both my existing aluminium reels. Of course, I can’t tell you about the long-term durability only having had it for a couple of months, but I have high hopes.

Really Nice Looking Gear
Admittedly, you don’t buy fishing gear like this because of the way it looks, far from it, but you can’t help but get that warm fuzzy feeling every time you see it. Initially, I wasn’t totally convinced about getting a baitcaster in orange, but the color scheme is quite low-key and subtle, so it’s fine.
At the price point, it’s a great reel and that’s before I even start talking about the casting distance I get out of it. The braking controls are right on point too, meaning that when you’re wrestling fish to the shore, it offers a reassuring strength and smoothness that will let you win the battle more often than not.

I’m no salesman and I’m sure that there are people out there who would do a much better job than me in selling the virtues of this fantastic Lews reel.
However, what I can absolutely say is that as a long-time angler, it hits all the high notes in every place you’d want it to and for that, it’s got to be worth considering. Is it the best reel I’ve ever used? Perhaps not. Is it the best low-cost reel I’ve ever used? Absolutely.
So, don’t let anyone tell you that graphite just doesn’t cut it, as when reels are as well put together as this one, it performs just as well as any aluminium reel I’ve used.
