Front-loading washing machines are known to be way more efficient than top-loading ones. They use much lesser energy, less detergent, and are more effective in maintaining the quality of delicate fabrics.
However, there is one downside to owning a front-loading washing machine. They can easily get mouldy if not used properly and can often lead to unpleasant smells that spread throughout your laundry room. Spending some time every month and giving your washing machine a quick clean will help prevent all of this.
You do not need additional cleaning chemicals to scrub out your washing machine, just some ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. Moreover, this method does not require you to use bleach and is thus an eco-friendly way of cleaning.
Things You Will Need
To carry out this method of cleaning, here are some things that you need to keep in handy:
- Two cups of vinegar
- A quarter cup of baking soda
- A quarter cup of water
- A scrubber or scrub sponge

Step 1: Mix Baking Soda and Water
For the first step, measure a quarter cup of baking soda and put it in a small bowl. Then pour some room temperature water into the bowl and mix it. Add water little by little to make sure that no lumps form in the process. The baking soda will be the “detergent” that we will be using for cleaning the machine.
While baking soda alone has little cleaning power, when mixed with vinegar, it becomes a lot stronger than many detergents. Pour two cups of vinegar into a bowl or measuring cup. Do not mix the baking soda and vinegar just yet. The washing machine will do that for you during its wash cycle. Take your baking soda mixture and vinegar to your washing machine.
Step 2: Add the Ingredients
Add the vinegar directly into the drum of your washing machine. Now pour the baking soda mixture into the designated detergent dispenser or tray of the machine.
Step 3: Run a Hot Water Wash Cycle
Run a normal wash cycle but with the hottest setting of water available in your washing machine. When the vinegar and baking soda along with the hot water will react, all the mineral deposits and mould along with any kind of germs and bacteria will dissolve. This will further leave your washing machine spotless and smelling much better than before.
Step 4: Scrub the Opening and Exterior
To get rid of stubborn residue from the opening of the machine, scrub it with a clean scrubber and then wipe it away with a clean cloth soaked with water.
The method takes a couple of hours, depending on the wash cycle time of your washing machine. Cleaning your washing machine once a month makes the washing machine fresher which results in fresh and more hygienic clothes.
