Everyone loves a clean computer free from junky apps and unused files. But while cleaning, we often unintentionally delete some important stuff. Also, our hard drives are electronic devices that are prone to damage or corruption. So, there is always a chance of data loss.

Whenever you delete something from your hard drive, the file isn’t wiped entirely from memory, although your disk space will be shown as free. The deleted file stays in its memory location until the computer allocates that space to another file overwriting the older ones. So, there is still hope.

In this Mac data recovery tutorial, you’ll get to know the process by which you can recover data from Mac OS that you might have deleted accidentally.

Recover your Lost Data from a MacBook Pro

  1. Checking the Trash Bin

Whenever you delete something from your system, it doesn’t get deleted at once (unless you use shortcut keys to delete it permanently). The system sends it to the Trash Bin, and you need to delete it manually afterward to remove it from the system.

Steps to recover files from the Trash Bin:

  1.  Find the Trash Bin at the end of the dock on your MacBook Pro home screen.
  2. Open it and check the list of all deleted stuff, and if you’re in luck, you’ll find your deleted item(s) there.
  3. Right-click on it and select the “Put Back” option from the dropdown menu, and your item(s) will be restored to its original location.

Note: Files stored in the Trash Bin get deleted automatically after 30 days.

  1. Checking Backup Drives and Cloud Storage

Keeping backup of your important files on a backup drive or cloud storage is an important practice to prevent data loss.

If you can’t find your deleted file in the Trash Bin, then this is where you need to check next. Apple’s built-in “Time Machine” securely backs up your data and stores them in local storage like an external hard disk.

Steps to recover files from the Time Machine:

  1. Connect the backup drive to your MacBook Pro.
  2. Navigate to the last known location of the item(s) on your system.
  3. From the menu bar, click on the backup icon and select “Enter Time Machine.”
  4. Scroll through the timeline to find your deleted item(s).
  5. Select the item(s) you want to recover (press SpaceBar to preview the file).
  6. Click on the “Restore” button, and your item(s) will be restored to your system.

Also, check any cloud storage like Apple Cloud, Google Drive, etc., where you might have uploaded your file if you didn’t find it in the Time Machine.

  1. Using a Data Recovery Software

If you could not find your file by the above two steps, you’ll need to use a data recovery software that will use complex algorithms to get back your lost photos and videos. Search online, and you’ll see that there are lots of data recovery software that claims to recover your deleted data. So, which one to use?

Wondershare Recoverit is one of the best data recovery software you can find on the internet. It has all the tools you’ll require to get your work done efficiently and fast. Plus, you don’t need to be a computer engineer to use it.

It’s easy to use and can recover photos, videos, audio, documents, and many other types of files. You can recover data of more than 1000 file formats stored in various file systems like NTFS, FAT, HFS+, APFS, to name a few. All this is done while keeping your data 100% secure.

Using Recoverit, you can recover data from Mac or Windows drives or plug in your USB Flash Drive, External Hard Disk, Pen Drive, Camcorder, Video/Music Player, Camera, and all other devices you can think of. It can recover files from more than 2000 types of storage devices.

It has the highest recovery success rate of 95% and can recover data from accidental deletion, formatting, device corruption, virus attacks, etc.

It has advanced built-in features that can recover and repair corrupt videos and can help you access your data from a crashed system.

You can start using its services from Wondershare Recoverit. First, you need to download Wondershare Recoverit Data Recovery Software for Mac OS from the official website of Wondershare.

Note: There are two ways of using Recoverit to recover data from Mac. The first one is downloading Recoverit on the same MacBook Pro where the hard drive containing the deleted file is installed. The second one is connecting your MacBook Pro with a second MacBook Pro and installing Recoverit on the second MacBook. The second process is safer because it will ensure that the installed application doesn’t overwrite the memory location of the deleted file. The primary MacBook drive will then appear as an external disk drive on the secondary MacBook.

After installing Recoverit on your system, follow the steps below:

  1. Run the Wondershare Recoverit software. It will automatically detect the internal and external hard drives on your computer. Select the hard drive which you want to scan for deleted files and click on “Start.”
  1. The software will scan your entire hard drive for deleted files. The scan speed will depend on the speed and capacity of your hard drive (with the latest update, the search speed has soared up).

Recoverit provides you with many filters and a search bar that will help you pinpoint exactly the files that you want to recover. This drastically speeds up the scanning process. The app will display real-time scan results of recoverable files. If you find the deleted file while the scan is in progress, you can stop the scan or wait till the scan is finished.

  1. Now, you’ll see the list of all recoverable files on the screen. Click the files you want to restore and click “Recover.”

Once you click on “Recover,” you’ll be asked where you would like to store the file. We recommend that you avoid storing the file in the corrupted disk, which might be risky and result in complete loss of the data. Store your recovered file in another external drive or another MacBook.

What if none of the methods above work?

This is the worst-case scenario where there might be some physical damage to your hard drive due to excessive heating or your MacBook falling from your hand. In that case, it is advisable not to tamper with it by yourself (unless you are a professional). Take your MacBook to an Authorized Service Center only to prevent further damage to your system. Get it checked by a professional ASAP, and let him try to recover the data for you.

To prevent any data loss in the future, try to back up your data on cloud storage or use the Time Machine provided by Apple to back up to a local drive. Because once a deleted file gets overwritten in its memory location, no software will be able to recover it unless it is backed up. Better to be safe than sorry.

We store our important data in physical drives, which can get deleted accidentally, or the drives might become corrupt or damaged. In such scenarios, Wondershare Recoverit is happy to help you.
