Social media has the power to make people famous. But what’s even more intriguing is that it can turn a person into a celebrity. You’d be surprised at the celebrities that have become famous thanks to social media. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many other platforms have this power. So who are the famous that started their careers on social media? The list will surprise many of you. With all that said, let’s start.

Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, or as people know her under her stage name, Halsey, is an American singer with millions of followers on social media. And it’s that same social media that made her famous. But not in a way that you might imagine.

Halsey blew up on social media when she released her first song – Ghost. She posted the song on SoundCloud, and what came next was history. In an interview for Rolling Stones, Halsey said that her Twitter went off like a rocket the very next day. Due to the sheer amount of hype for Ghost, Halsey got a few offers from prominent record labels. Since 2018, she has had three albums and featured on the Billboard Hot 100 and US Billboard 200. Her 2018 single, Without Me, reached the number one spot.

Shawn Mendes

You probably remember the popular American video-sharing platform Vine. The platform, although shut down in 2017, has helped numerous celebrities become superstars. Shawn Mendez was one of them. The singer started his career by making six-second video covers on Vine. Although he wasn’t the most popular Viner, he did have more than 300,000 followers.

What Shawn did had was an amazing voice, and his Vine following helped him secure multiple record deals. When he was just 15, Island Records approached Mendes with an offer. Atlantic Records and Sony Records offered deals too. But all that’s history as Mendes has a lucrative singing career. He performed at the Grammies, the VMAs, and even hooked up with Camila Cabello. Unfortunately, they broke up this year with no one knowing why exactly.

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber is a household name. But not everyone knows how exactly Justin Bieber became what he is today. Before his hit single, Baby, Justin began uploading videos on YouTube. The videos were covers of popular songs from the likes of Justin Timberlake and Chris Brown. Bear in mind, this was back in 2007.

But is social media the reason why Justin Bieber is one of the most known celebrities today? While die-hard fans know about the close relationship between Justin and Usher, some say that Usher stumbled upon one of Justin’s videos on YouTube by sheer coincidence.

The validity of the story isn’t that important. What’s important is that Justin Bieber has more than 170 million albums sold worldwide.

Nolan Gibbons

Not everyone knows about Nolan Gibbons. The then 15-year-old was a singing sensation that posted videos on Instagram. He got thousands of followers and joined up with Acapop! KIDS. The group was just as talented as Nolan. They also went on a US tour, selling hundreds of thousands of tickets in the process. With millions of views on YouTube, many claimed Nolan was the next big thing.

However, tragedy struck the Gibbons family, with Nolan’s mother sharing the awful news with his fans. On August 18th, 2020, she posted on her Facebook page about the trading and unexpected passing of her son. Social media made Nolan famous and helped him achieve many of his dreams. Alessia Cara

Yet another celebrity singer that started her career by posting covers from popular artists, Alessia Cara is a Grammy-winning artist. But did you know that Cara started on Facebook? She was a fan of Jessie J and Amy Winehouse – and her music pays tribute to the latter.

At the age of 16, Cara switched from Facebook to YouTube and gained hundreds of thousands of subscribers very quickly. This helped her get the attention of record labels, who were quick to snatch her. She eventually signed for Def Jam and released her first hit single, Here. The song sold 3 million copies in the first year and made the Billboard Hot 100 that very same year. What’s rest is history.

Charlie Puth

Charlie Puth shares a similar story to Shawn Mendes. Both started their careers by making covers of popular songs. But in the case of Charlie Puth, it was “Someone Like You” from Adele that really gained everyone’s attention. In 2011, Charlie signed a record label with Ellen Degeneres. Well, not with Ellen herself but with her record label.

Regardless, Charlie was a huge hit! His biggest break was in 2015 when he collaborated with Wiz Khalifa to make “See You Again” – a tribute song to the late Paul Walker.
